HOAMA, the elexir of Immortality

Hoama (Sk. Soma),  is that divine immortalizing juice of ecstasy (Ra-fedra), of fervor for the Divinity. In line with the dual imagery of the Avesta, hoama is said to be concealed in the growths of earth, in the waters of existence; & even here in our physical being. It has to be squeezed out with conscientious, hard effort and offered to Ahura Mazda; for in this ritual we mimic the relevance of selfless actions to conquer all opposition
Zarathushtra himself, was preparing for a Hoama  sacrifice when he received his first inspiration.

From the Atarsh Neyash: “Aesmo Zasto, Baresmo Zasto, Gao zasto, Havano Zasto”.

It complements the path of Vohu Mano (the Path of Love & Devotion) transforming the devotees' love for an abstract Godhead, into actionable Love of Humanity & all creations.

This is the inner meaning of performing all actions in the name of Ahu, the Immortal Creator of all Life. Vohu mano’s supreme gift-LOVE, comes only to those who have achieved the transformation of worship of the Creator, into Love of all of God’s creation.

This pathway of Love, is the path of Sav-angha
For Ahura Mazda, who commands (not demands) our Love & Affection, is to be loved along the whole spectrum of Love one is capable of feeling:
The love of a Friend, a Sibling (sister/brother), a Parent (father, mother), a Child (son, daughter) or Spouse (husband, wife) - For he is to the devotee, one in all, one & all & all in all.

The term Sev-ishta in the Gathas & its cognate Sav-angha seen in the Havan Geh invocation, both referring to Hoama, & its liturgy involving squeezing the juice out of its stems are derived from the root ‘Sav/Sev”.
The complementary meanings are:
That which enables one to be in communion with the lord,
That which binds (through love),
That which is contrived (method/procedure).

This is mysticism, Holy Communion. It is in these different senses that the word has been used in the Gathas, & on the physical plane of wearing & tying our kusti.

Cognate words such as Ut-sav (festivity), Aa-sav (elixir) or Sav-n (pressing of soma/homa leaves for juice) all of which are associated with delight & ecstasy.

From Atash Neyash: Khvarenangho Savangho Mazda-dhatahe
That Royal, radiant, Purifying Hoama, instituted by Mazda.

Thriving mainly in the cool mountainous climes of  ancient Greater Khorasan, (see Balkh-Margiana Archeological Complex), traditionally the highly conservative Zarathushtis of Yazd (Iran),  use Ephedra (genus Ephedra), known locally as hum or homa, & have been exporting them to their co-religionists in India.

According to researchers the Hoama/Soma priests can be described accurately as "Millers & Smiths". Ephedra shrubs, on being burnt, produce a reducing atmosphere (better than regular wood charcoal), suitable for smelting metals such as gold & copper from their ores (which was what Balkh was famous for). I believe this is the genesis of our temples using silver strands of wire instead of bound stems of an actual creeper plant in the Bareshma ceremonies.

According to David Frawley[1] :
“Euchrist, the Christian Greek for the holy sacrament is derived from Vedic Su-haritas. Thus when Christ says at the last communion that “this is my body”, the actual Greek term for body being “Soma”, (Avestic Hoama) the vedic God of Immortal wine & nectar. Frawley therefore considers the last communion to be the Christian modification of the soma sacrifise, & the medieval search for the holy grail, reflecting the search for the ancient soma challis, the vessel in which the immortal soma was held & from which it could be partaken of, to achieve immortality.”

In the Vedas (IX.68.7) we find a complementary extrapolation of Yasna 44.18 (See the blog on Spiritual Quest), detailing how the ritual of squeezing Soma (Hoama) out of Ephedra stems, with diligince & devotion is intristically aligned to the goal of self realization.

“The Ten maidens (senses) are purified when your stems are diligently pressed, O Soma, as you are also held by the thoughts & insights of the seers. Through atomic points &  invocations that purify, as you are held, reveal to us the energetic path to self realization".

Verethreghna (Behram Yazad) is closely associated with Haoma and the preparation of this “Elixir of Immortality".

However, whereas Hoama is considered a divine nectar, the ambrosia evolving-purifying mortality into immortality; we find that the Rigveda is focused on the processing of Soma in the context of acquisition of material wealth & Indra (the reigning deity at that time) consuming huge amounts of Soma (Hoama). It is here that Hoama, said to produce spiritual intoxication (rafedra- bliss) in the devotee; takes on a degenerative modification, becoming a producer of physical intoxication, possibly through mixing with poppy seeds & other similar hallucinogens. Thus when later sections of the Vedas dispensed with Indra (& his might is right philosophy), it dispensed with Soma (Hoama) too.

Based on this negative transformation under Indra, some Avesta translators went further  trying to sever Hoama's connection from the message of Zarathushtra.

An example is the word “Muthrem” that has been wrongly, mischeviously & maliciously translated by some translators as urine,  to show Hoama in poor light.
However, according to Dr Stanley Insler (The Gathas of Zarathushtra, Dr Stanley Insler, 1975, P290-291).
“Two things stand in the way of   interpreting this word as urine. The word means solid excretement & “Maresma” is the word for urine in the Avesta. “Therefore I attribute the word to the root “mu”, to be deluded, foolish, appearing as “mura”,  dumb; & posit, therefore the meaning “Folly” for “muthra”.”

Yasna 48.10.
Kadaa Mazda maa Naroish-Naro Vesantey,
Kadaa Ajain Muthrem aah-hyaa mada-hyaa
Yaa Angra-yaa Kara-paa-no Uroopa-yenti ,
Yaa chaa shratu dushey-kshthro Dakhyu-naam

When , O Mazda, shall I attain that unending prosperity of self realization,

When will I be able to expunge (remove) this
hideous folly from our community
Of  surrendering their ability to reason; of being Blind & Deaf to the Truth, to Reality,

Which is how the degenerate & destructive rulers ensure submission & conformance from the naive & the trusting.

Along similar lines, the Yasna liturgy is made up of 72 chapters in conformity to the 72 attributes of Ahura Mazda (Hormazd Yasht) andthe 72 threads that make up the holy cord (Kusti).  Significantly, the Vesperad andthe Van-didad, too were said to have 72 chapters originally.

(The Avesta is composed of Yasna (Sk. Yagna), Yasht, Visperad andthe Vedidad. The Yasna is the oldest and more aligned to the language of Rig Vedic Sanskrit. Being the compilation of Zarathushtra and his immediate followers, it is the most authoritative)

KAVA Thri-ta (Thrae-tona)

Following the famous Yama or Yima whose reign ended ingloriously from both the Avestic & Vedic  documentation; was one of the earliest Master-Philosophers (Kav-yas) :

Vere-thre-ghna (= Var-haran = Beh-ram Yazad):

Thrae-taona (Faridun[1] in Shah-name) or Thrita in Avesta (Yt. 13.113) is the same personage as Trita/Thrita of the Vedas.  He is identified as the ancestor of Manus-chir/Mino-chehr (Manu of the Vedas) of the royal family of Philosopher- kings addressed as Kavyas.  The modern name “Minoo” of the Parsis is derived from this.

Representing the triumph of Light over darkness, of Good over evil, of Reality (A-sha) over the deception and illusions (Druj) of life; Verethreghna, is referred to in Behram Yasht as “Verethragh-nem Ahura-dha-tem” meaning that powerful deceit eliminating strength instituted by Ahura Mazda.

Yasna 44.16: Ke-vere-threm jaa, thwaa poi Senghaa yoee hentee

What Powerful, (Verethrem) force, will overcome and offer protection from the forces of darkness; led by this snake (Vrita) whose coils have formed a barrier, blocking out Light (knowledge) and Waters (prosperity) for those of us (our fraternity) aligned to the Truth.

Vrita (later Azhi Dahaka) has been personified as a demon (a dragon-snake) with three mouths and three heads. A demonic chameleon, master of deception, who deviously hides his true evil self and strikes his victims surreptitiously. Vrita was said to have blocked the rays of sunlight (knowledge) and the flow of rivers (prosperity) into the Aryan lands.

The story of the battle between ThraƩtona and the snake Vrita (later Azi Dahaka) is very ancient and is mentioned in great detail in the Vedas.
His epithet Vr-tra-han, (Verethre-ghna in the Avesta) meaning slayer of Vrita, is found in every single Mandala of the Rigveda. In the khila-suktas and later Sama-hitas, & ofcourse in the Avesta (Behram Yasht) he is identified as Verethraghna.
(With Permission from A. Fantalov, 2001)

As per Dr Irach Taraporewalla: “Thrae-taona (Faridun in Shah-name) is specially associated with the curing of diseases with the help of mantras, and is the great physician and healer. These points are also associated with Him in the Atharva-Veda, where he is identified as Trita. In both traditions he bears the patronymic name of Athwya (from Atharwa, their priestly tribe) and is closely associated in both with Haoma and the preparation of this “Elixir of Immortality”. In the Yajur-Veda he is mentioned as granting immortality.
The Vedic tradition also identifies him as Traitana (which is nearer the Avestan name Traetaona) who had slain a mighty three-headed snake, the Azhi Dahaka, who had for ages oppressed the world. The same tradition, in almost the same words, is found in the Avesta.
In the later Persian 'Epic of the Kings' (the Shah-name) this three headed demon becomes the Semitic tyrant Zohak, from whose oppression Iran was freed by the Royal Shah Faredoon.

According to Yakubov (1996). A remarkable 5th century carved wooden gate at the entrance to a Zarathushti temple near Pendjikent in northern Tajikistan, excavated in 1957, gives incredible details of Zoroastrian history.

According to Saidmurad, the Persian poet Firdausi used the detail on this gate to compose his epic poem of Persian history the Shahnama. The panel, which was charred in a fire (as part of the Drujic campaign of destruction witnessed after the fall of the Persian Zoroastrian empire), shows the legendary giant, Shah or King Zohak - a figure, which abounds in ancient carvings and paintings in Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan and is also the name of an abandoned mountain and town close to Bamiyan. There are also paintings of Zohrak depicted as a frightening demon.

In latter times, after the separation of the Indo-Iranians, due to the Mazda Yasna-Daeva Yasna schism, this designation of Dragon slayer was usurped by Indra, the Vedic God.
However, According to Dr Mills, Trita was the original dragon smiter . Indra seemed to only re-enact the original victory which is mentioned in the Avestan Yasht. In Rig Veda Aptya is only an epithet added to the name Trita.

Parallel stories have been found in Baltic and Slavic mythologies, indicating common Indo-European roots.

Invocation from the Behram Yasht:
“O thee of radiant splendour & brilliance, I dedicate this sonorous invokation (yasna), to Verethreghna, that powerful deceipt eliminating strength instituted by Ahura Mazda;
For strength, to come pouring down onto me like the divine waters (Zao-thro-byo) ; to gain victory through deeds performed, aligned to Truth  Justice."

As mentioned earlier Verethreghna (Behram Yazad) is closely associated with Haoma and the preparation of this “Elixir of Immortality. However, whereas Hoama is considered a divine nectar, the ambrosia purifying mortality into immortality; we find that the early Rigveda is focused on the processing of Soma in the context of acquisition of material wealth and Indra consuming huge amounts of Soma (Hoama).
It is here that Hoama, said to produce spiritual intoxication-rapture (rafedra) in the devotee; takes on a degenerative (material interpretation), becoming a producer of physical intoxication, possibly through mixing with poppy seeds and other similar hallucinogens.
This could have also been a point of divergence between the Mazda-Yasnis & the early Vedics.

Thus when later Vedas (Hindu scriptures) dispensed with Indra and his excesses, it also dispensed with Soma (Hoama).
As per J Chatterjee, This concept of “Verejna”[2], the active warrior for good., was advocated by Zarathushtra as one common characteristic trait of the new faith. To actively and aggressively take the path of A-sha (Sk.Rt-am) Truth/Righteousness/rectitude/Justice.

This message is referred to as “Verezyedhai mantra”----the universal mantra of militant righteousness, a term repeatedly used in the Ardebehest Yasht and the Atarsh Neyash.

Ys46-6: He is wicked, who supports the wicked; and he is ethical, to whom the truthful are not dispensable at the alter of convenience.

Ys46-18: Who does me a good turn, a better turn to him; But an evil turn to him, who does me ill.

The idea of turning the left cheek, after the right has been smitten is totally rejected. Forgiveness is not to be confused with non-resistance to evil.

“Zarathushtra himself put this into practice, when at the age of 77 he died, defending the sanctity of a fire temple.” [3]
He therefore showed a better conception of martyrdom than what we find in later violence centric ideologies.

This militancy is reflected in the 3 weapons placed in the alter of the Atash Behraam, namely the sword, the shield and the spear, which represent the 3 manthravanis against all evil: The Yatha Ahu Vairyo, the Ashem Vohu and the Yenghe Hataam.

Incidentally these implements are also found in the post Vedic Satya[4] Narayana Puja; the only “puja” that is not dedicated to Gods (Devas).

We find this concept encapsulated in the Haftan Yasht:
“If one is aware of an aspect of the Truth, he should, without fear or favour, act according to it, and impart it to others”.

This concept, not found in the Vedas, finds an echo a few thousand years later in the Bhagwad Gita 2.31:
“For a warrior, nothing is higher than a war against evil, the warrior confronted with such a war, should be pleased, O Arjuna; for it comes as an open gate to heaven. But, if you do not participate in this battle against evil, you will incur sin, violating your dharma and your honor”.

[1] From the Vanant Yasht:…”Pa name niv khwareh Faredoon, Faredoon Athawyan”…clap 3 times.
I invoke, thy mind stimulating powerful protecting Aura, O Athwyan Faredoon.
[2] Verejna is derived from the root "Vajra" meaning massive/strong/thunderbolt/erect spine; the pre-requisites of a "warrior".

[4] One may note that Sat-ya = Truth Reality is none other than the Avestic A-sha and Nara-yana, the perfect man is the same as Khordad the man who achieved perfection in a single life time)

DAY-NA Manthra-vani

DAYNA Manthravani:

 The pathway to prosperity,

to enlightenment (Self Realization)

FOREWORD:

As the name suggests, Dayna (pronounced Day-naa), meaning the pathway (of Light-Knowledge) to excellence (enlightenment); and Man-thra-vani[1]  meaning victorious Mantras; is that pathway to excellence (enlightenment) that relies on the individual making independent, judicial, integrity based Choices.

Derived from the root word 'man' (pronounced "mun" ą¤®ą¤Ø , to rhyme with bun), that unique capability 'to think, to reason' , to plan logically and “thraa” ą¤„्ą¤°ा  meaning crucible/concentration of; Mantra literally means 'instrument of thought'; that which when intoned stimulates the mind to reason.  Mantras are hymns, which through their intrinsic quality of stimulation of the intellect and reasoning faculties, benefit those who chant them with devotion and understanding. They form the original constituents of the Gathas.

The ancient Kavas[2] (Philosopher Kings) developed a language of external sounds, based on rhythmic variation, perfectly harmonious in its structure and evolution. This language had a common element: its Roots, the elemental basis of word formation. It is these root words, uniquely aligned sound syllables, which form the basis of Mantras, the devotional category of which are called Stoat. ą¤ø्ą¤¤ोą¤¤ (rhyming with "moat")
The Kavas correlated scientific knowledge with sound and composed Mantras, which were at once, masterpieces of knowledge, capable of stimulating the intellect, yet simple enough for the message to be memorized and grasped[3], at different levels depending on the intelligence of the hearer. The Mantra thus becomes the vehicle to experience inner light (Aathraa).

According to NASA researcher, Rick Briggs[4],
“Among the accomplishments of the grammarians can be reckoned a method for paraphrasing (Vedic) Sanskrit in a manner that is identical not only in essence but in form with current work in Artificial Intelligence.”

The word (Mantra[5]) so heard radiated powerful intellect and intuitive[6] stimulation when properly recited by the devotee, through knowledge, understanding and faith. Little wonder therefore that our creator Ahura Mazda is addressed as Khwa-tr[7]ą¤–्ą¤µाą¤¤्ą¤°  (Vedic Savitr ą¤øाą¤µिą¤¤्ą¤°), that aspect of the Creator that stimulates of intellect.
While outwardly based on the language of the masses (Avesta/Vedic Sanskrit), these “Manthric” compositions used single sound syllables based on root words placed in specific meter (sequence)[8]. Thus we have the Ahuna-vaiti Gatha composed on the basis of 7 + 9 sound syllables.
Mantras have a rhythmical meter, invoking the infinite, a sacred hymn, radiating an aura of light (color) and sound, uniquely aligned with the forces of nature, inducing & stimulating the mind to positive actions.
Owing to their specific sound syllable and resulting vibration[9], these incantations could not be conveyed by the printed texts lest the message got corrupted. They could be transmitted only between the two minds - of the Guru or Zota/Zotr (Teacher) and the Sishya[10] (Student) in a way similar to the way Mobeds of today are taught the scriptures.
Little wonder then that our Gathas and Vedic hymns, composed in a very specific meter, were passed on by teachers to pupils through an oral transmutation only, for thousands of years. They were not written down; in fact this was prohibited[11].

According to Dr A A Macdonell[i] : “The hymns were composed almost exclusively by a hereditary priesthood”, later addressed as Ud-gaate or chanting priest and Hotr (our Zotr/Zoata) or reciting (preacher) priest.
It is this oral transmutation of our Gathas and Yasnas that have not only preserved their concepts, undiluted, over thousands of years, changes of languages and geography but also, saved it from destruction at the hands of Jihadist[12] zealots.

[1]  Manthraa= that which stimulates reasoned thinking + Van: Victorious[2].
[3]  By entomology,   Ava-sthaa = os-tha = lip; clearly indicating the mantras were meant to be exclusively recited. Just as the term Osta is used even today to refer to a priest, so too in the Vedas the word “Ava-yuj” is a priest
[4] AI Magazine (Artificial Intelligence) of spring 1985.

[5] According to James Newton Powell (University of California, Santa Barbara, USA)
“Modern metaphysicians are rediscovering the fantastic powers released through spoken words. By certain arrangements of words, such as in Mantras, a tremendous vibratory force could be set upon in the invisible mode, which profoundly affects physical and metaphysical substance in the body of man.”
[6] The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. ~ Albert Einstein
[7] Khwatr (Khursheed) is none other than Vedic Savitr to whom the Gayatri Mantra is dedicated. Vedic “Saa” = Avestic “Kh” or “Khw[8]

It has been found that the human mind is capable of memorizing and being influenced if sounds are in a 7 +/- 2 sequences.

[9] The String Theory (or the universal theory postulates that the shape of that infinitesimal, fundamental building block of life (and the universe), is that of a `string'. These strings, which can be open, closed, or looped, (like DNA) “vibrate” with a unique identificational fingerprint of sound and color   depending on the nature of the particle. One mode of vibration, or `musical note', makes the string appear as an electron, another as a photon.

[10]  Derived from the Avestic term “See-shaa” (Ys 28.11) meaning to teach.

[11]  The Avesta was handed down orally among Zarathushti priests (Athrawans) over thousands of  years, and cannonized to writing, probably for the first time during the Sassanian period (3rd - 7th centuries AD)”

[12]  Fanatical hordes of savage arabs- faithful disciples of a prophet of a very different order from Zarathushtra swept over Persia and brought the usual categorical alternatives. The larger part of the Avesta was finally lost and the bulk of the Parsis, accepted per force, the sorry substitute of the Koran.
